Max Irlinger, a young man from the Berchtesgadener Land, has a very special dream: he wants to become the new mountain distiller ("Bergbrenner") in the Berchtesgaden National Park in the Bavarian Alps. Since the 17th century, Germany's oldest mountain distillery has been sending its root diggers into the mountains to distil schnapps from mountain gentian and masterwort in remote distillery huts.
The film accompanies the young distiller Max during the summer when he has to prove himself as a mountain distiller. A time full of hard work and exciting encounters in the spectacular mountain world above the Königssee. In a small detour, the film allows another view of a summer in the mountains: a visit to the two young dairymaids Sophia and Julia on the Priesbergalm opposite the Watzmann.
