On Foot and Without Money

A Year in Germany

ZDF 37 Grad, 2016, 45 minutes

Jens Fröhlke, 53, lives with his wife and his two sons (15 and 21) in Harpstedt (Lower Saxony). The bookseller has spent his entire life in the region. In the summer of 2014, he decides to turn his life around and roam around Germany, on foot and without money, for a year.

This year, at the end of May, he plans to set out – without knowing where he’s going or how long he will stay in the various places. His motivation: He wants to find out how much he changes during this year; he wants to get to know other forms of living; and he no longer wants to be part of a system based mainly on...fear. As for himself, Jens says he has spent the last twenty years living just like that – with fear constantly hovering over him: How can I finance my family, how can I keep my book shop going, how can I afford to buy the house?
